KALIHI UNION CHURCH PROFILE SUMMARY (updated 2009; figures are from 2005)

Kalihi Union Church (KUC) is a multi-ethnic body of believers, whose vision is to love God and love people, reaching everyone to be a believer, every believer a disciple; every disciple a servant; every servant a minister.  This vision is affirmed in KUC’s mission statement.   [click here for 2007 update regarding our mission statement/vision]

“To whole-heartedly love and magnify the Lord, evangelizing this generation, drawing them into membership, growing them to maturity, equipping them for ministry and mission to the world.”

Since its inception in 1913, KUC governance has been basically congregational in form and philosophy.  However, in recent years, there has been a gradual movement towards elder leadership by the Council of Elders and delegation of the day to day responsibilities to the pastoral staff.  Under the leadership of the Council of Elders, the Church’s vision and mission are realized and implemented by five (5) ministry design teams.  The five (5) ministry design teams are: Magnification (worship); Mission (outreach and the world mission); Membership (fellowship); Maturity (discipleship, education, youth); and Ministry (service).  Each ministry design team consists of an elder and/or pastor and lay leaders.

KUC is a member of the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA) and subscribes to the EFCA doctrinal position, which is summarized in the EFCA Statement of Faith *[link is best viewed in Microsoft Internet Explorer]

The KUC campus is situated on 4.5 acres of land located in the residential and light industry district of Kalihi on the west edge of the City of Honolulu, on the island of Oahu.  The campus facilities include a sanctuary with a seating capacity of approximately 450, multipurpose chapel with seating capacity of approximately 100, administration  building, two class room buildings, welcome center, gymnasium, maintenance storage building and two (2) houses.  There are long range plans to renovate and expand the sanctuary and the welcome center.

The total average attendance for the two (2) Sunday Services is approximately 450.  Of which approximately 50% of the church attendees are over 50 years old; 35% of the church attendees are between the ages of 31 to 50 years; 15% of the church attendees are less than 30 years old.

As with most churches in America, females outnumber males by a ratio of 1.6 to 1.  The church attendees are predominately while-collar workers or retirees, who commute from areas outside the district of Kalihi.  The major ethnic groups include Japanese, Okinawan, Chinese, Caucasian, and Filipino.  The annual church budget is approximately $1.5 million dollars.  KUC planted the Mililani Community Church and Christ Church at Kapolei on the island of Oahu in the 1980’s and the late 1990’s respectively.

KUC is best described as a bible teaching, family oriented church.  KUC has a widely known reputation of being a friendly church.
