About KUC Preschool & Kindergarten

Kalihi Union Church Preschool & Kindergarten is a church-sponsored school, unlike anywhere else on the island. Our staff is committed to academic excellence and teaching students how to apply the truths of God’s Word to every aspect of life. We intentionally designed our classes to be a place that is welcoming, nurturing, and academically stimulating.  Our environment is such that each child will feel loved, unique, and part of a large family. Our entire program has been developed from a Christian worldview, planting seeds of faith in children throughout the year. We equip our children to learn to love God, to love others, and thus they will impact the world around them. We believe in educating the whole child: spiritually, socially, physically, emotionally, and intellectually, and our activities emphasize this approach. The students participate in a weekly chapel time where they study bible stories more in-depth and have a special worship time with our on-campus pastors.

Biblical principles are integrated into every subject taught in our school. We use the Abeka curriculum to teach phonics, reading, language, poetry, writing, and math.  The Abeka curriculum features a traditional approach to teaching and learning, cross-subject integration, spiral review, and plenty of hands-on activities to prepare children for a lifetime of learning successfully. The daily schedule is structured and consists of teacher-directed activities, group circle times, learning centers, outdoor play, and free play. Creativity is a crucial component of lessons and daily activities in our programs and is expressed through art, music, drama, and physical education. Our programs also provide supplemental classes, including Hawaiian, Japanese, Hula, & Ukulele classes! We hope you consider allowing us to collaborate with you in your child’s education!

Starlisha Sylvester, Director

Aloha! My name is Starlisha Sylvester. We are a military family, so we have moved around quite a bit. However, with my husband now retired from active duty service, we are so happy to make Hawaii our home. We currently live in Ewa Beach, where we were blessed to purchase a home. I have 2 children, ages 6 and 8 years old. I have over 12 years of experience in the Education field. My extensive background in education spans from early education to elementary education. I began my teaching career as a pre-school teacher, followed by years as an elementary school teacher throughout the United States.

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education as well as a Bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education, an Associate in Childhood Psychology, and my CNA in Early Childhood education. For the last 3 years, I have had the privilege of serving as Director of Preschool Ministries at a mega-church in Tampa, Florida. It is my distinct honor to have the opportunity to serve you and your child here at Kalihi Union Church.

My personal belief is that every child can learn. As educators, it is our responsibility to provide each of them with an equal opportunity to succeed in school and to fully prepare them for kindergarten and beyond. Our success is based on your child’s success. Collaboration and communication are very important aspects of school success and teamwork. I believe in open communication, and I will always leave my door open for you. I am fully committed to this position as Director and will work collaboratively with my staff to ensure each family and child has a positive early educational experience. I am looking forward to getting to know you and your children!
